HOW TO CHOOSE AN ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY

Finding the right assisted living facility is not a task to be taken lightly. If you or someone that you love is getting ready to make the move to a facility it is important that you find one that is going to fit with you. Many people do not move from one assisted living facility to the other, though it does happen. If you take the time to find the facility that best fits you, instead of you trying to fit to the facility, your stay will be much more enjoyable.

There are a number of things you should consider as you make your selection on an assisted living facility. Below are a few examples of information you should have before you decide.

Comfort Level

1. Are residents allowed to have pets? (Even if you don’t have or want a pet, how do you feel about living with other pets in the community?)

2. What are the meals like? (Not only flavor, put appearance, variety, special diets)

3. How large is the facility? (Sometimes bigger is better in that they offer more social activities, but smaller facilities also offer social activities, where are you more comfortable?)

4. Are residents allowed to have their own cars?

5. Is the facility clean and well kept?

6. What is the attitude and demeanor of the staff?

7. What is the attitude of the other residents? (Are they happy living there or would they rather get out?)

Services

1. Is socialization encouraged?

2. Is it easy to socialize with other residents? (Are there common areas such as lounges and dining rooms)

3. Are there opportunities for you to get involved with the surrounding community?

4. Does the facility offer transportation?

5. If there is transportation, how flexible is it?

6. Is the facility licensed by the state?

7. Is the administrator licensed by the state?

Amenities

1. Is there an on-site recreation/gym?

2. What amenities does the facility offer?

3. Is the facility equipped to handle special need residents?

4. Are there extra storage units available to residents?

5. Is there a television and phone in each unit? If so how is the billing taken care of?

6. Are there religious activities available (such as Sunday service?)

Finances

1. How much does it cost per month to live in the facility?

2. What have the trends been like in the rate increases?

3. Is there a deposit and if so is that deposit refundable should you change your mind, or move out?

4. What services are included in the monthly fee?

5. What would force a resident to leave the facility?

6. Is the facility connected to or with a nursing home?

7. What happens to the resident should they get to the point they are unable to pay?

Safety

1. Is each room equipped with an intercom and/or nurse call button?

2. Does each room have a 24 hour emergency response system accessibility?

3. Is there proper lighting?

4. Is there an alarm system or other security system in place in the facility?

5. Does the facility and each unit have air conditioning?

6. How close is the nearest hospital?

7. Is there a doctor and pharmacy onsite?

8. What is the typical response time for staff to respond to a call from a resident? (Ask the staff… and talk to the other residents so that you get a more accurate feel for this one.)

This is only a sample of the questions you should get answers to before deciding on an assisted living facility. Feel free to add your own to each category so that you are able to make the best choice possible.
